NEXUS

curated by William Lakin e Sophie Gladstone

NEXUS is an exhibition curated from an open call for BA and MA students graduating in 2020 and 2021. The exhibition is loosely split into three themed ‘rooms’, (Room 1 – identities, Room 2 - realities, and Room 3 – space/place). Whilst there is much cross-over between the rooms (much of the work could be seen to represent two if not all three of the themes) the overriding emphasis are the connections made between often seemingly disparate themes, techniques, and subject matter.

Our new, largely socially atomised existence has provoked experimentation; inspiring students to consider metaphors in their immediate environments as a means of representing subjects which may not be accessible in a traditional photographic sense. Interpretations of reality run through the works and the questioning of cultural norms, social hierarchies, and other phenomena - which whilst prevalent can be difficult to depict - reoccur in student work made during this period.

The last 18 months has been an intense and timely period of self-reflection provoked by limitations of movement and activism against systemic injustices. It has been a time to reconsider our personal and collective identities and the systems, objects and ideologies which make up our conception of reality. We hope that this selection of graduate work from the past two years reflects both the anxieties and opportunities of a world in flux, presenting new and innovative ways of seeing.
